Unit Rounded

‘Round typefaces keep going in and out of fashion, for many reasons. One of them always has been the media the face would be used for: type on screens and back-lit signs suffers from radiant light. Sharp type will look blunt, and the amount of bluntness that occurs is usually unpredictable.’

Erik van Blokland is the inventor of the Superpolator software for interpolating typeface weights. Here’s Erik Spiekermann’s Unit Rounded in action.

Rosewood stud identity

OptaDesign has completed a new identity design for Rosewood Stud. As part of a ‘Cambridge Virtual Skunk Works’, Malcolm and I joined forces with Julian Price to design a logotype and apply it to print and screen communications. Here’s a potted look at the variations we presented and some brief notes on the thinking behind each version.

Great reggae music

Cracking track by Toots & the Maytals. As Omar Elsayed says, ‘uploading videos of classic reggae 45s playing on a turntable is a really good idea...what I especially like about these videos is how aware I am that I’m seeing and hearing a specific record owned by a specific person. And how by maintaining that ownership, some sense of fulfillment for the record collectors seems to be preserved.’ Via Matt Webb.
